It took less than half an hour before they reached the crater rim. There actually was a spaceship at the bottom. It had the shape of a pointed cone, about seventy meters high and just under twenty meters wide at the base. Further structural details could not be seen from a distance; there was no national emblem, and no color markings adorned its outer shell.

“We just have to get down there and we’ve made it!” Orlgans’s words contributed massively to the encouragement of the team. Two other Mehandor were given the task of carrying Thora. So that they did not lose control on the slope, another two Mehandor walked in front of them. They were supposed to help out in particularly difficult places. Thora was followed by the group of Mildred, Julian, Rhodan, and Gucky.

Their descent was noticed, as evidenced by an airlock opening on the ship. Bright light suddenly covered the floor of the volcanic crater and tore rugged rock formations out of the darkness. Everyone walked faster, keeping their goal in mind.

A figure stepped out of the air lock and raised his right hand in greeting.

Orlgans shouted, “Holy moly! It’s the trembling man himself!” He turned around. “Let’s go! A little bit more, then we’ve made it. We’ll be safe on the ship.”

From Rhodan’s position as the tail light, the person in the airlock was hardly recognizable. In addition, all his attention was devoted to the transport of Thora. It was only when they reached the bottom of the crater that he turned his attention to the Tremor. Orlgans stood at a respectful distance of at least one meter away.

What is going on? Rhodan pondered. Orlgans didn’t even try to break the Tremor’s back with his embrace.

At last he had a clear view of the figure. It was a man. A strange man. His outward form seemed to waft, to move. Rhodan winked.

It’s not a mirage; the air doesn’t flicker—it’s too cold here for that. The figure looked as if it were flickering. Like a bad hologram.

“Are you picking up thoughts?” Rhodan asked Gucky.

“Yes,” he replied meekly. But no further comment could be gotten out of him.

So, not a projection after all. The Tremor stood unchanged in front of the airlock.

“Rhodan, come here!” cried Orlgans.

Rhodan walked up to the Tremor to greet him. A few steps in front of him, he faltered. “My God! Ellert!”

Ernst Ellert. The German who, like hundreds of thousands of others on Earth, had set out for the Gobi Desert months ago to help realize Rhodan’s vision of a united humanity. But Ellert had fallen victim to an accident. An Arkonide energy shield had been turned on where he stood. Ernst Ellert had died and become something that was no longer human. His body had fallen into a kind of hibernation and remained on Earth, but his spirit had set out for the stars. Space and time were no longer an obstacle for him.

What had led Ellert to Snowman?

“You know each other?” asked Orlgans, dumbfounded.
